Glo undersea cable lands in Senegal

SECOND National Operator (SNO) and Third Generation (3G) compliant company, Globacom Limited, has said that its undersea cable from Lagos has touched ground in Senegal, in the West African sub-region enroute to Europe.

This is coming as the telco commended Nigerian media for standing firm behind it since the official launch on August 29, 2003.

Chief Operating Officer (COO), Globacom, Mr. Mohammed Jameel gave this insight at a get together for media practitioners in the country held in Lagos at the weekend.

He disclosed that Glo would be four years on August 29 this year but should not have been there without the massive support of the nation’s vibrant media organisations and practitioners.

Mr. Jameel reiterated Globacom’s determination to succeed, saying it would soon become the largest telecommunications network on the continent.

He stressed that though Glo has in the last four years made some enormous achievements, the telco is resolved to get bigger as the years go by.

“We intend to play in the big league and we intend to bring capacity everywhere; in the air and even under the sea as a one-stop shop in telecommunications solution,” he said.

In accordance with the Globacom’s outline, he revealed that the Glo’s undersea cable has now reached Senegal and would soon be concluded.

The under sea cable, also called Glo 1, he said, is being laid across West Africa sub-region up to Europe, adding that the transcontinental cable would reduce the challenges of communications in Africa, thereby making voice and data connections easy and at better rates.

“So, as we celebrate we decided to begin with our friends in the media,” he said.

Essence of the gathering, Mr. Jameel said was to appreciate the Nigerian media and to further solicit continued support.

According to him, Glo has given cars to dealers, subscribers, hence the telco did not see anything bad in offering a brand new car up for grab through raffle draw for the members of the media.

“So, why not one of our friends in the media,” he declared, noting that though Glo is starting with a car this year, and has the intension to increase this number by next year.

At the end of the event, Kunle Solaja of SoccerStar magazine went home with the brand new Honda Civic car, while Enyi Nwagwu of IT World magazine also took home the Samsung Plasma Television, a photojournalist, Mr. Benedict from Leadership newspapers smiled home with a Laptop, while prayer was said for late eBusiness Editor at ThisDay, Mr. Samuel Famakinwa.

Champion Infotel recalls that Glo in its first year became the fastest growing Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications network in Africa, achieving a record of one million subscribers and covering over 87 towns in about nine months.

The subscriber figure at the moment stands at over 13 million with coverage extending to over 40,000 cities, towns, communities and major roads, thus making the company the second largest operator in Nigeria.

The network says it plans to extend frontiers to the West African sub-region as it is concluding negotiations with two neighbouring countries.
